The Chairman of Moventia, Josep Maria Martí, took part in the “Sustainable Cities” event organised by the Sabadell Chamber of Commerce and the Cerdà Institute, which seeks to foster involvement from the business community in the sustainable transformation of urban environments. Josep Maria Martí took part in a round table discussion alongside Cristian Bardají, Head of the Mobility Department of RACC, and Julian Arenas, Head of the Mobility Department of the Cerdà Institute. During the discussion, they spoke about the current mobility model from a sustainable and innovative perspective, as well as the challenges and opportunities presented by the energy transformation in the transport sector.
In his talk on the current mobility model, the Chairman of Moventia insisted that mobility is a fundamental driving force for the economy that accounts for 5% of GDP and represents up to 20% of logistics costs for companies. Josep Maria said that, based on private vehicles and fossil fuels, the current system has an environmental impact that must be urgently reversed given that transport accounts for 15% of all greenhouse gas emissions. He therefore defends efficient mobility not only as a social service but a strategic tool for competitiveness and cohesion throughout the region.
Josep Maria Martí also recalled that Catalonia is heading towards a population of 9 million, a fact that poses the challenge of strengthening transport infrastructures. With a rail network already operating at full capacity, the Chairman of Moventia claimed that the only viable way to offer more services immediately and flexibly lies in a firm commitment to creating more bus routes. According to the chairman, this expansion is key to absorbing the increase in demand and guaranteeing regional connectivity in an increasingly demanding demographic context.
Finally, he highlighted the energy challenges posed by electrification of the sector, warning that the existing power grid lacks sufficient capacity to absorb the large-scale charging of vehicle and bus fleets. In order to overcome this obstacle, he called for close collaboration between the public and private sectors that would enable the expansion of electricity infrastructure and strengthen local energy sources, such as biomethane and wind. Only then, he concluded, will it be possible to tackle the next stage of electrification and consolidate a real energy transition that does not overload existing supply.
The event was also attended by Ramon Alberich, President of the Sabadell Chamber of Commerce, and Eulàlia Planes, Chair of the Sabadell Chamber of Commerce Ecological Transition Committee.
