  • The collective mobility division of Moventia has invested a total of 150.5 million euros since 2020, strengthening its commitment to building a sustainable regular bus fleet.
  • In 2024, over 55% of the entire Moventis fleet of 2,500 vehicles (including its coaches) is already sustainable. This is an 8% increase on last year.
  • Moventis is incorporating AI into its digitalisation strategy to anticipate demand and optimise bus occupancy levels so as to offer more efficient and personalised mobility services in line with the challenges of the future.

Moventis, the collective mobility division of Moventia, is beginning its third year at the Tomorrow.Mobility World Congress in Barcelona as one of the leading collective mobility operators in the region and with the goal of becoming a benchmark player in the design and development of mobility for the future. The company, which currently operates a regular and discretionary fleet of more than 2,500 buses and coaches, 41 trams and 40,000 city bicycles in seven countries, is driving its strategic vision with a focus on two main transformative priorities: digitalisation and sustainability, thereby reaffirming its commitment to offering safer, more efficient transport solutions in response to existing and future demands from society, urban and intercity mobility.

Another 30.5 million to decarbonise the regular fleet

Over the last five years, Moventis has consolidated its position as a sustainability benchmark in the sector by focusing on the decarbonisation of its vehicle fleet. Between 2020 and 2024, the company has invested the significant total of 150.5 million euros into building a sustainable fleet. This is an increase of 30.5 million in 2024 on top of the 120 million previously invested up to 2023. The investment made this year will enable 95 vehicles to be added to the urban and intercity fleet over the next seven years, including fully electric, gas and hybrid electric-diesel models. The arrival of these vehicles will be a gradual process between 2024 and 2031, thereby strengthening the Moventis commitment to reducing emissions from its regular fleet.

Since 2019, Moventis has increased the number of electric vehicles in its regular fleet by 153%. That fleet currently includes 52 fully electric buses, as well as 152 gas-powered and 196 hybrid vehicles. This transformation not only reaffirms the company’s commitment to a more eco-friendly fleet but also makes a significant contribution to improving air quality in the cities where it operates, aligning itself with sustainability regulations and public expectations.

In a broader context, which also includes the discretionary service coaches, over 55% of the entire Moventis fleet already complies with Euro VI regulations on reducing such pollutants as CO₂, nitrogen oxides (NOx) and particulate matter (PM). This progress represents an 8% increase in regulatory compliance on last year; from 47% to 55%.

“Our commitment to sustainability is, above all, a commitment to people and the cities where we operate, said Josep Maria Martí, CEO of Moventis and Vice-President of Moventia. “The electrification and modernisation of our fleet represents an essential step towards more environmentally friendly mobility that is healthier for the public and for the planet. We want to lead a change that inspires other stakeholders in the sector and we are going to continue investing in technology and innovation to make collective mobility an increasingly safer, more efficient and more sustainable option”.

An AI-focused digitalisation strategy

Alongside its sustainability plan, Moventis is also currently working on an ambitious digital transformation process that seeks to develop and implement innovative solutions capable of guaranteeing connected, safe and sustainable mobility for all passengers. The company has identified four core areas to achieve that: operational planning, control and oversight; passenger and employee safety; commercial management optimisation; and data collection with artificial intelligence (AI) for the development of new mobility models. This comprehensive approach enables a more effective response to needs in the community and to the urban transport dynamic.

Artificial intelligence has also become a fundamental tool for the mobility sector by enabling more precise and adaptive solutions in an environment of changing demands. Through its AI strategy, Moventis not only seeks to streamline internal operations but also to create a more intuitive and personalised transport experience for passengers, in line with the sustainability and efficiency expectations of the current market.

As part of that strategy, Moventis has implemented an AI system that allows bus occupancy levels to be anticipated; a pioneering step forward in the Spanish mobility sector. This system, which is based on deep learning models, analyses demand patterns based on historical data, weather factors, calendars and special events. Using this information, the company can predict passenger flows and adjust its operations in real time, thereby improving the passenger experience and streamlining the use of resources.

Furthermore, Moventis has integrated advanced AI systems into its video surveillance platforms to enable passenger flows to be analysed securely and anonymously and origin-destination patterns to be revealed. This facilitates the precise planning and adjustment of routes, optimising journeys based on real demand and offering more efficient and sustainable mobility.

“Our commitment to artificial intelligence goes beyond technological innovations; we are looking to create a mobility ecosystem that can provide safety and comfort to passengers while reducing our carbon footprint”, says Esteban de Kelety, Corporate Systems Director at Moventia.

Latest developments in digitalisation

Over the last few months, Moventis has made giant strides towards modernising its operations by implementing key technological innovations. Firstly, it has introduced advanced software that enables real-time management of and interaction with every facet of company operations. This not only optimises communication between the various parts of the fleet but also ensures a constant and precise flow of information, in turn improving decision-making in critical situations.

Furthermore, the fleet control system has been completely digitalised. This enables exhaustive monitoring of operations in real time. Having digitalised this system guarantees that data on vehicle availability, routes and timetables are instantly accessible, which improves operational efficiency and makes it easier to respond to any eventuality.

The team led by Esteban de Kelety has also rolled out applications based on artificial intelligence, as well as a cloud-based validation system known as Account Based Ticketing (ABT). This system is revolutionising the way in which passengers access public transport as it eliminates the need to buy physical tickets. With the “tap & ride” system, passengers simply need to tap their card or mobile device on the validation device, thereby expediting the boarding process and improving passenger comfort. This approach not only simplifies the passenger experience but also boosts sustainability by reducing the use of paper on physical tickets.
